Topography & Geography
- Three Bereiche carved by the W-shaped bends of the Main — the names refer to the river shape:
- Maindreieck = "3-sided Main" (triangle)
- Mainviereck = "4-sided Main" (square)
- Steigerwald (eastern forest area)
- Maindreieck produces ~3/4 of Franken's wines — centred on Würzburg.
- Mainviereck — westernmost zone (Aschaffenburg + Miltenberg area); closer to Baden → relatively warm climate → rare in Franken: red wine plays an important role here (Spätburgunder).
- South-facing slopes; the highest-quality sites are the less frost-prone S / SE faces.
Climate
- Most continental climate of the major Anbaugebiete (further east) → warm summers but short growing season (suits early-ripening Silvaner), cooler autumns, harsh winters, spring frost risk.
- Rain shadows: Rhön (N), Steigerwald (E), Spessart (W).
