Topography & Geography

Position & Major Features

  • Major winegrowing areas bracket the conjunction point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans
  • A braid of mountains traces the coastline forming an L-shape → carves the country into climatic zones
  • Vineyard elevations range from 50 to 600 m

Mountain Influences

  • The Western Cape's many mountain ranges, slopes, and aspects create a range of climates

Drakenstein Mountain Range

  • Includes Groot Drakenstein and Klein Drakenstein Mountains
  • Part of the Cape Fold Belt in the Western Cape
  • Creates the rain shadow that runs from Paarl to Franschhoek

Coastal Bays

  • Three bays (west to east): Table Bay, False Bay, Walker Bay

Climate & Weather

General

  • Situated between 32°–35°S, similar to California and Israel in the Northern Hemisphere
  • Warm Mediterranean climate in the Western Cape (but generalization is dangerous)
  • Long, dry summers; rain generally confined to winter months
  • Warm winters; lack of consistent winter freeze can lead to failure of winter dormancy
  • 2017–2018 water crisis: severe shortage led Cape Town to plan for "Day Zero" (dams falling below 13.5% capacity); narrowly avoided through restrictions + 2018 summer rains

Oceanic Cooling

  • Most grape-growing areas cooled by the ocean → allows cultivation of both cool-climate and heat-loving varieties (e.g., Pinot Noir vs. Shiraz/Tinta Barocca)
